Another Side Effect of High Gas Prices

I have wondered what the $ per gallon tipping point would be for commuters to switch from driving their cars to work, to riding their bikes. At what $ value does it become economically unfeasible to drive a car to work?

There are many factors at play in this, how far you have to go? Do you constantly carry anything with you on your ride? Obviously this wouldn’t work so well for long haul trucking as it would be pretty impossible to haul construction hardware, concrete sewers, or aluminum tubing on a bicycle. But commuters, well we just mostly haul ourselves. Here is an interesting story about protecting bicyclists in NY city, the domain of the taxi cab, and traffic jams. NY is not the only city looking into this alternative mode of transportation either.
